While ephedrine-based products such as Metabolife are effective at helping people lose weight, there have been many serious side-effects associated with their use.
Recently, Metabolife International has come under heavy fire from both consumer groups and government officials. At the heart of Metabolife's problems is the company's recent disclosure of 13,000 consumer health complaints associated with its product.
Previously, Metabolife maintained it had received no reports of adverse health effects from its products. But in September of this year, the company gave the FDA 13,000 reports of health problems associated with its products. Among those reported health problems were three deaths, 20 heart attacks, 24 strokes, 40 seizures, 464 episodes of chest pains, and 966 reports of heart rhythm disturbances.
Officials attribute these disturbing consumer health complaints to the ephedrine contained in Metabolife's flagship product Metabolife 356.
According to the Associated Press, "the US armed services have banned ephedra products from being sold on military posts. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has banned its use by student athletes and the National Football League has banned its use by the pros. Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany all prohibit sales of ephedra."
Metabolife maintains that is products are safe when used as directed by adults.
