Pyruvate Information

The body makes pyruvate naturally every day during the metabolism or digestion of sugars and starches. Pyruvate is the compound to start the Krebs cycle.

The Krebs cycle is an energy cycle in the body of enzymes and chemical actions that yield direct precursors to ATP or ATP itself.

Pyruvate is actually derived from pyruvic acid. Although pyruvic acid alone is chemically unstable and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and nausea, when combined with a salt (such as sodium or calcium), it becomes stabilized pyruvate. As well as being a naturally formed product of digestive processes, pyruvate also exists in many different foods. Red apples, cheese, dark beer, and red wine are just a few.

As with any weight-loss drug, pyruvate should be combined with a regular excercise routing and a proper diet.

How Does Pyruvate Work?

The mechanism of action is unclear, but available data suggest that the increase in performance following pyruvate-dihydroxyacetone supplementation may be a result of an increased reliance on blood glucose, thus sparing muscle glycogen. In summary, chronic supplementation of pyruvate-dihydroxyacetone may be beneficial from a preventive medicine prospective as well as for certain athletic endeavors.

Supplements such as pyruvate have been shown to be effective at high dosages, but there is little mechanistic information to explain its purported effect or data to indicate its effectiveness at lower dosages. Pyruvate hasn't been tested for their effectiveness or safety over prolonged periods of time.

How To Take Pyruvate and Pyruvate Dosage and Administration

Dieting with a moderate decrease in calorie intake (10-15%) along with supplementation of calcium-pyruvate in small quantities is recommended. Although more studies need to be conducted to determine the exact right amount to take, a good rule of thumb according to Bill Philips, editor of Muscle Media is 1 gram of supplement per 10 pounds of body weight.

Consuming 30 grams of pyruvate per day might be a little much. However, in moderate amounts, pyruvate should prove and effective.

If you suspect a Pyruvate Overdose

Pyruvate overingestion might lead to stomach upsets (nausea, diarrhea). However there are no clinical studies available that would point to pyruvate overdose effects on the body itself.

Pyruvate Precautions and Contraindications

If you are pregnant, nursing or have a medical condition, consult a physician or health care practitioner before using pyruvate.

Pyruvate Experiences and Results

Research indicates that pyruvate not only has weight loss effects by burning fat, but also stimulates energy for higher performance in exercise. Besides fat loss benefits, pyruvate is supposed to enhance the transport of glucose and protein into muscle cells thereby boosting performance levels in exercise. It works by increasing amount of ATP available to the mitochondria, as well as inhibiting fat production. Pyruvate is thus often used by bodybuilders to get toned, cut, and have more energy.
